Questions We Wish Every Homeowner Asked Before Working With Us
by M&G Construction
Choosing a remodeling contractor is about more than comparing estimates or looking at portfolio photos. You also need to know who’s responsible for the work, how decisions are made, and what to expect if plans change.
At M&G Construction, we help homeowners throughout Reno, Sparks, Carson City, and Northern Nevada confidently navigate remodeling and restoration projects.
Here are 13 questions we wish every homeowner would ask before hiring us (or any other contractor). Our answers will help you make informed decisions and get a feel for what it’s like to work with M&G.
1. Is M&G Construction licensed to perform residential remodeling in Nevada?
Yes. M&G Construction holds a Nevada B-7 Residential Remodeling license (#0093295), along with C-3A Carpentry and Repair and C-3E Drywall classifications (#0089989).
Before hiring any contractor in Nevada, you should verify that their license is active and appropriate for your project. You can check licensing information through the Nevada State Contractors Board.
A valid license is an important starting point, but it’s also worth asking about the contractor’s experience with projects similar to yours, who will oversee the work, and how questions or concerns will be handled.
2. Do I need architectural plans before contacting M&G Construction?
No. You can contact us with an idea for your remodel, even if you don’t have architectural drawings, a finalized layout, or material selections. We work with homeowners at different stages of planning. Some come to us with completed plans, while others are still exploring the possibilities for their space.
Our Design → Select → Build approach helps turn those early ideas into a more defined project. We can discuss your goals, evaluate the existing space, and help identify which design decisions or additional plans might be needed before construction.
3. Can I visit M&G’s showroom before committing to a remodeling project?
Yes. The M&G Remodeling Showroom in Carson City is open to homeowners who want to explore cabinetry, hardware, tile, and other material samples before making decisions.
We have full cabinetry displays across a range of price points to help you compare styles and finishes in person, explore cabinet configurations, and get a better sense of which options fit your space and budget. Select hardware even comes free with your cabinet order!
Walk-ins are welcome during showroom hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you’d like dedicated design assistance, we recommend scheduling an appointment.
You also don’t have to hire M&G for a complete remodel to use our cabinetry services. Homeowners and contractors can work with our team on cabinetry design and purchasing as a standalone service.
4. Can I see a 2D or 3D design of my remodel before construction starts?
Yes. At M&G Construction, we offer 2D and 3D visuals to help homeowners better understand their proposed layouts and selections before construction begins. These visuals can help you evaluate cabinetry configurations, room layouts, and how different design elements work together. It’s also an opportunity to identify preferences or concerns before those decisions become part of the finished space.
Our design services focus on quick turnaround and include up to three rounds of complimentary revisions, with additional rounds available if necessary for your project. The specific visuals included for your project are outlined when discussing your design needs.
We want you to have a clearer picture of what you’re building, not just imagine the finished result from a list of materials.
5. Who will I communicate with during my remodeling project?
You'll meet your estimator/project manager at your initial walkthrough, and that same person will stay with your project through completion. Because they've seen your space and heard your goals from the start, there's no handoff or need to re-explain your project. They'll provide progress updates, guide you through material selections and other decisions, and be your go-to contact in the field.
Our office team supports your project behind the scenes and alongside you. This includes in-house design assistance, project documentation, and project coordination to keep schedules, selections, and paperwork on track. We also use JobTread to support estimating, project management, customer communication, and invoicing.
Before hiring any remodeling contractor, it’s important to understand who your primary contact will be once construction starts, how you’ll receive updates, and whom to contact when a decision or concern needs attention.
6. How will I know exactly what’s included in my remodeling project?
A written remodeling proposal should clearly explain the work being performed, the materials or allowances included, and the terms you’re agreeing to before construction starts.
At M&G, we begin by learning about your goals and evaluating your project. We then develop a scope of work and detailed estimate for your review.
Our proposals identify the planned work, relevant material specifications or allowances, payment structure, and anticipated scheduling information. Once the proposal is approved, the project moves toward a formal construction agreement.
When you review these details, you’ll have the opportunity to ask what’s included, what’s excluded, and which decisions still need to be finalized. A clear scope helps everyone work from the same expectations.

7. Who handles permits, subcontractors, and inspections during my remodel?
M&G Construction’s project management responsibilities include coordinating permits, subcontractors, and quality control.
The specific permits and inspections required for your remodel depend on the work involved and where your home is located. A project in Reno might have different jurisdictional requirements than one in Carson City or another Northern Nevada community.
Before construction, homeowners should understand which permits are required, who will coordinate the necessary steps, and how specialized trades will be managed. Ask these questions early, especially if your project involves structural changes, electrical work, plumbing modifications, or significant layout changes.
8. What happens if you find unexpected damage during construction?
Unexpected conditions discovered during a remodel may require additional evaluation and changes to the original plan. Older homes can have concealed water damage, deteriorated materials, or other issues that aren’t visible until demolition begins.
Finding a problem doesn’t automatically mean the entire project needs to change, but it’s important to understand the condition before deciding how to proceed. At M&G, our remodeling process includes evaluating site conditions and communicating adjustments when unexpected issues arise.
If a problem is discovered during your project, ask your contractor what was found, what needs to be addressed, and how the proposed solution could impact the scope, schedule, or budget. You should understand the reason for a change before making a decision about it.
9. How long will my remodel take?
A whole home remodel can take about 3-12+ months to complete, while a single bathroom remodel might take 2-12+ weeks. A realistic remodeling timeline depends on your project’s scope, design complexity, material availability, scheduling, and existing conditions.
That’s why a contractor should evaluate your specific project before giving you a meaningful schedule.
At M&G, we discuss anticipated timing during consultation and project planning, addressing scheduling information in the proposal and construction agreement.
Before work begins, ask which material selections or decisions could affect the schedule and how changes to the anticipated timeline will be communicated.

10. Can I stay in my home while it’s being remodeled?
You may be able to remain in your home during a remodel, but it depends on which areas are affected and how construction will interfere with your daily life.
For example, remodeling your only bathroom creates a different challenge than renovating a guest bathroom. Kitchen projects might temporarily limit cooking, storage, and access to appliances, while whole home renovations can disrupt multiple living areas.
Before construction, discuss access to essential rooms, work-area boundaries, dust and noise, cleanup expectations, and whether any stage of the project could make staying at home impractical. The goal is to understand the likely disruption before work starts so you can plan around it.
11. Can M&G Construction help restore my home after water or fire damage?
Yes. We provide water damage, fire damage, and insurance restoration services for homeowners in Northern Nevada.
Restoration involves identifying the affected areas, understanding the necessary repairs, and coordinating reconstruction to return the damaged space to usable condition.
Our restoration process includes discussing the damage, evaluating conditions on-site, and developing the repair scope.
If the damage is recent, it’s important to determine whether immediate mitigation is needed before reconstruction can proceed, such as stopping a water source or professionally drying affected materials. The appropriate first steps depend on the type and extent of damage.
12. Can I upgrade my kitchen or bathroom during an insurance restoration project?
Yes. If part of your home needs to be reconstructed after damage, you can discuss remodeling improvements at the same time. For example, a kitchen restoration project might create an opportunity to explore a different cabinet layout, updated finishes, or other changes you’ve been considering.
However, there should be a clear distinction between repairs related to the damage and optional improvements. If insurance is involved, ask which work falls within the documented restoration scope and which upgrades would be homeowner-requested additions.
M&G Construction provides both remodeling and restoration services, so we can discuss your repair needs alongside your broader goals for the space. Any proposed improvements should be reviewed as part of the project scope before work proceeds.

13. What happens after my remodel is complete, and what warranty does M&G provide?
We conduct a final walkthrough and provide a one-year workmanship warranty that begins when a project is substantially completed.
The walkthrough lets you review the finished work, identify remaining touch-ups, and discuss relevant care or maintenance considerations.
Our workmanship warranty covers qualifying issues resulting from installation or work performed by M&G or our subcontractors. It does not cover every issue that might come up after construction, and certain materials or products might have separate manufacturer warranties.
If you notice a potential workmanship issue during the warranty period, you can contact our team with a description of the concern and photos when possible. We’ll review the issue and determine the appropriate next steps.
